Katharina Schratt : « l’Amie »

 31

                        ————————————————————-

Katharina Schratt was the only daughter of Anton Schratt paper producer (1804-1883). At the age of six, Katharina discovered a love of theater. Although his parents have tried everything to dissuade him, she made her debut at age 17 as a guest of the Theater an der Wien. After a commitment to German Theatre in St. Petersburg, she married a Hungarian consul, Nicolas Ittebe Kiss (1852-1909) in the spring of 1879. From this union was born a son, Anton, in 1880. Finally, the couple separated in 1880.

It was during a theatrical performance in the city in Moravia Kromeriz the visit of the Russian Emperor Alexander III as Emperor Franz Joseph saw her for the first time. Affirmed a friendship between them and lasted without interruption from 1900 to 1901. From 1901, she knows disagreements with the Emperor and that will last until his death in November 1916, although their relationship had, after the death of the Empress Elizabeth in 1898, tentatively repris.L Emperor showered Katharina Schratt precious jewels and gave him a villa in Gloriettegasse in Vienna – near the Schönbrunn Palace, and near the opera. The Emperor, however, has resisted all attempts to win Catherine Schratt by its influence on the person, the direction of the Imperial Theatre.

1909 marks the death of her ex-husband.

After the death of Emperor Franz Joseph in November 1916, the former actress lives in the solitude of his apartment on Kärntnerring. She took care of animals (she had a monkey, parrots and seven dogs), she did readings for the benefit of charities. In his later years, Catherine Schratt was a woman deeply religious, who went to church every day and several times a week was a pilgrimage to the tomb of the late emperor. On 17 April 1940, Katharina Schratt died at the age of 86 years. She is buried in the cemetery Hietzing (group 19, Number 108) in Vienna.

Has been posted on the Net, a picture of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria (the father of Elisabeth) with a complete stranger. So is this one of those (many) mistresses or one of these (many too) illegitimate children? Person, for the moment, knows …
